Trouble Is My Business

OK. So you wound up on my website after reading about me writing the new Spenser. Your first question might be, "Who in the hell does this guy think he is?"
Well, I'm sure I'm not Bob Parker. RBP is an icon of crime writing. Most critics seat him at the table of the Big Four with Hammett, Chandler, and Ross Macdonald. He's a legend and a true hero of mine.
I got into classic crime writing by being a fan of Mr. Parker's work. He introduced me to those who influenced him. And after reading every word he wrote -- most multiple times -- I learned from him, too.
It wasn't up to me to decide if Spenser should continue. This was a decision made by Mr. Parker's family.
And if they wanted Spenser to take on more cases, I wanted to be a part of it.
The fortieth Spenser will be my tenth book. I started my career covering the crime beat for a major newspaper. I've been a full-time novelist for the last ten years with my last four books centered on famous American criminal cases -- one of my last told the true story of Dashiell Hammett's work as a Pinkerton.
Most important to Spenser fans, I'm a man who appreciates baseball, good beer and food, and dogs.
Although I'm almost finished with the new Spenser novel -- after working on it for many months -- it won't be out until next spring. Being able to write about Spenser, Susan, and Hawk is more fun than I could have ever imagined.
I can tell you this, the estate could not find another writer more passionate about Mr. Parker's work or more honored to continue this iconic series.
I know he has many more cases left. Boston needs Spenser.
And I for one wasn't ready to see him go. For now, the office light at the corner of Berkeley and Boylston remains on. I hope to keep it shining a good long while. -- Ace

Well said, Ace. Kudos! (and congratulations again!)

I am looking forward to your Spenser books. You are right about many things: I never heard of you (sorry), I am not ready to let Spenser go, and RBP was great. I will get The Ranger in June and see if I like it. This must be quite a challenge. I hope everyone will cut you some slack as you find your way. I was hoping that something like this would happen with the Spenser character. Who better to write a new Spenser than a fan?

Good luck!

Good luck, sir. Looking forward to it.

Okay, I'll try one more time to post a comment to your blog. I've failed twice before. Anyway, at first I was annoyed anyone would have the temerity to step into Dr. Parker's triple e shoes to continue Spenser or Jesse Stone.
Mostly I was jealous they didn't ask me first.

I don't care who writes Sherlock Holmes or James Bond but Spenser is different. After reading Travis McGee I was directed to Spenser. Like all others, I lapped it up, read and reread all of the books as they were parceled out one a year. My favorite to date is the April Kyle trilogy.

But I cared who wrote Spenser because I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Parker at a book signing and got to spend 30 minutes with him. He is my writing idol.

In any case, I looked up your background and will read the book about Hammett (another idol)and then your new one The Ranger.

I wish you all success becasue your success means our pleasure.

Dear Ace,

I just ordered "Sixkill" with a heavy heart knowing that I would never again be able to read about my favorite characters and to enjoy the crackling dialogue and the memorable characters RBParker created. He was, indeed, the best who will always be missed.

Welcome to the world of Parker aficionados, Ace. We will await news of your forthcoming Spenser book and of all those to follow. Thanks for keeping that office light burning.

big shoes to fill, will wait and see

Congratulations. To you and to us. I was inspired growing up by Robert B. Parker's books too. Ive been a licensed private detective the past 20 years in Illinois. Not exactly the world of Spenser. Which is where you come
in now. LoL
Looking forward to your continuation of the Spenser series. Praying you dont change anything from his favorite gun to his clever patter but dying to see your work. Best of luck to you.

I will look forward to reading your first Spenser.

I respect your courage in attempting to continue an iconic series. I cannot help but be curious about how you are approaching the writing. Can we expect new directions for Spenser and other characters or should we expect you to continue in the same vein as Parker and mimic his style. I hope for the former, but will nonetheless be interested in reading the novel when it is published regardless of the direction you take.

Ace,
Good Luck, my friend.
You have guts to take on this mantle. This is indeed an honour.
Mel Farman just informed me.
I am pleased and support your task.

Sincerely,

THE ENIGMATIC MR PHELPS… By David B. Green

Comprising; the Phelpsiad: 32-Red, Berlin by Christmas & Brethren of Acadia

SYNOPSIS: Based on real life events, this serialized panorama written for screen, spans fourteen years in the life of the enigmatic Oscar Phelps; International fraudster, psychopath, manipulator, impresario, raconteur, wit, friend and cold-blooded killer.

The Enigmatic Mr. Phelps delivers inexorable proof that there exists a true contender as successor in the sociopathic hierarchy to Patricia Highsmith's Tom Ripley. A contemporary, though classic crime mystery thriller, contains all the ingredients of the genre…Beautiful women, hot sex, mixed with a good dose of violence and action, set against the starkly contrasting landscapes of warm and inviting Nerja in Andalucía and a menacingly cold Niagara-on-the-Lake.

I've been reading RBP for a while and have to say I'm as sad as anyone that he is no longer here. I plan on reading your novels to get to know your style a little before your Spenser novel is released. But if Mrs. Parker, and Putnum, say you're the man for the job then I will gladly give you a chance and truly wish you the best of luck. I know I'm just one reader among millions and my opinion doesn't count for a whole lot but I'm looking forward to reading what Spenser, Susan, Hawk and Pearl get into next.

Ace,
When i heard you'd be taking over the Spenser series, I got my hands on a copy of Crossroad Blues and loved it! It features nice atmospheric storytelling. I do have one request as you move forward with Spenser. Please bring Hawk back! The dynamic between he ans Spenser is just too rich not to display. Plus, it might be interesting to see Hawk and Zebulon Sixkill both working with Spenser. My best to you. I eagerly await your first Spenser.

Hi, I'm a huge Spenser fan. Mr. Parker in chats and interviews stated he couldn't write HAWK through his eyes--only Spenser. Now you're responsible for the continuing tales of Boston's greatest detective, can you write through HAWK's pov? Not as if you ever would.

Do you have a specific time you would like to explore Spenser's world? Will you explore bringing back KING POWERS?

Well, having just finished up Sixkill, I was inordinately sad that I'd not be able to read another tale of Spenser, when checking the Wikipedia page I came across the news you'd be carrying on the characters at the behest of the estate. Big shoes to fill, hard to imagine anyone else but RBP writing Spenser. And while I haven't read any of your other work before - though will probably pick up a couple in the interim - I look forward to reading your go at my favorite Boston PI. Maybe it'll be like all the great Holmes stories to come after Doyle. Good luck, and looking forward to reading your go at one of the all time greats.

I am also so excited about being able to continue reading about my favorite PI Spencer. I've been reading Robert B. Parkers book for many years and was crushed to learn of his passing. Good luck Mr. Atkins, hope you will share many more stories about Spencer with us.

So glad you have the cajones to continue Spenser. Don't mess it up, we know where you live.....in the mean time I look forward to reading your other works in preparation for Spenser.

I'm very pleased to see the 'torch' being passed.
After all, RBP picked up the reins for Raymond Chandler and developed as another master. Why not you also?
Best of luck, and I'll be 'reading'.

Ace, after having the great pleasure of reading the Lullaby manuscript, I have to say I am amazed. It's as if Parker's muse has taken up residence in the back of your mind. Anyone who truly loves Spencer will be delighted that the Parker family has found you so our hero can live on exactly as he always has. That's right, I'll say it, EXACTLY.
